Interesting Information about Orthopaedics

Orthopaedics - history

The term orthopaedics is made up of "orthos", the Greek words for the upright walk of the human being, and "pedas" the Greek word for "to render something immobile".

The term orthopaedics was first used by Nicolas Andry in 1741. In this term, he united many different possible treatment methods such as naturopathy, chiropractic, manual therapy, kinesitherapy as well as skeleton surgery.

Orthopaedics today

Nowadays, orthopaedics also deals with disease pattern and modifications of the entire skeletal system. A comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic concept is available to be able to treat diseases of the bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles.

Orthopaedics, however, is not only entrusted with the diagnostics and therapy of the diseases but also with their investigation, prevention and rehabilitation.

Orthopaedics follows the laws of physics

The laws of physics that apply in the biological organism are important basic principles in the orthopaedic therapy. Technical-mechanical thinking is combined with the biological self-healing of the body to be able to achieve optimum therapy results.

Orthopaedics is a holistic examination of the disease

According to present-day perceptions, mental processing of a disease plays a decisive role. The processing of pain, for example, is changed by the psyche. Thus, an experienced orthopaedist will never see a disease as a pure biomechanical problem; instead, in favour of a permanent therapeutical success, he will consider the person as a whole.
